Eon – a bird

Eileann – rock orisland

Innellan probably takes its name from a once prominent rock just offshore known as the Perch or bird island, now much reduced in size by centuries of water and wind erosion.

The Gaelic word eileann is used to describe almost any size of rock surrounded by water, from the smallest area that supports vegetation to the largest tract of land. In the days before printed maps and satellite navigation, early seafarers used such landmarks to find their way and named them accordingly.
