Colintraive - The swimming narrows

Colintraive (say ‘Colantrive’) is at the south end of the A886 on the east side of the Kyles of Bute. Cattle and horses used to be herded into these narrows to swim across to the mainland to join the drover roads to markets at Crieff and Falkirk. Today, it’s the crossing point for the ferry which takes vehicles and passengers to Rhubodach on the Isle of Bute.

And during the summer months, the Paddle Steamer Waverley passes through this restricted stretch of water on her way around ‘the Kyles’ to the pier at nearby Tighnabruaich (Tee–na-brew-ah). Take the Colintraive ferry if you want to visit Rothesay or Mount Stuart, St. Blane’s Church, or any of Bute’s beautiful beaches.
